H1N1 Confirmed in Pet Dog

H1N1 has been confirmed in a pet dog in Bedford Hills, NY, who was also negative for H3N8 (dog flu).  Took longer than I predicted but there it is.

Frankly, I suspect H1N1 is far more widespread in pets than we know.  How many will run their pets to the veterinarian rather than simply waiting out a case of the sniffles and cough so common in dogs, as in us?  Especially if one is still suffering from H1N1 themselves?  How many will pay for the H1N1 test for a pet?  Especially when the treatment seems to be the same whether the cause is H1N1, H3N8, or some other serious virus?

I'm glad to see some testing being done though.  It really does support that we need to treat health as a broader, communal issue; whether that "commune" is our home or the world.  Viruses and bacteria may have preferred targets but surely they aren't so picky if the preference isn't available.  After all, it's a matter of survival for them and they adapt better and faster than we humans it seems.
