Grocers Beware

Dr. Nancy Snyderman says we should all ask our grocers where our fresh products come from and if you grocers can "guarantee" that the food is safe; if not, don't buy it.  ROTFLMAO.  The government can't guarantee our food is safe but we should put that burden on the local grocer? HAHAHAHAA.

She al…

Slashing Women (and Men too)

Symbols have meaning.  That’s why we use them.  Words have meaning too, of course.  In questioning this silly shelter I’m dealing with that wants, after 5 months, to suddenly raise some issues, I’ve run across a number of disturbing issues and will address a single one today.    Texas Administrative…

H1N1 Confirmed in Pet Dog

H1N1 has been confirmed in a pet dog in Bedford Hills, NY, who was also negative for H3N8 (dog flu).  Took longer than I predicted but there it is.

Frankly, I suspect H1N1 is far more widespread in pets than we know.  How many will run their pets to the veterinarian rather than simply waiting out a…

Carnivores Live Longer

I said a while back that I believe we humans are carnivores rather than wanna be vegetarians.  Science is at least beginning to theorize that we may indeed live longer for having been big old red meat eaters.

"Over time, eating red meat, particularly raw flesh infected with parasites in the era bef…

H1N1 Vaccine for Swine Approved

I was comfortable going right on eating pork through this H1N1 mess but the USDA has expedited a vaccine and now conditionally approved it for a year of use.  Of course, here in the US, we aren't even entitled to a label that tells whether or not the swine was vaccinated.  The vaccine need only be a…

Swine Flu Vaccines, 1976

If you never saw the 60 Minutes segment on the 1976 swine flu vaccines connected to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), you really should take a few minutes and watch it.  I miss decent investigative reporting!

As to the new and improved 2009 swine flu vaccine: "As of November 24, VAERS had received 10…

FDA Pet Widget

Well, the FDA has created a widget for pet owners.  I've installed it on my front page, over to the right and down a scroll.  So far, I'm not at all impressed with the content but I'll let it sit there a bit and we'll see if it improves.

H1N1 in more Cats

H1N1 flu has claimed the life of another beloved pet cat in Oregon.  She was 8 years old.  In addition, 3 confirmed cats are recovering or expected to do so; 2 in Colorado and 1 abroad in France.  http://www.avma.org/public_health/influenza/new_virus/default.asp

I just keep wondering what else we…

XMRV follow up

Amazingly, there's already an XMRV test.  Expensive ($650 plus a doctor's visit and blood draw costs) and probably not covered by insurance but at least it exists.  And a few links for those interested in XMRV/CFIDS

Retrovirus Infections, You AND Your Pets

It’s time to start thinking of health in broader terms than has traditionally been done.  The simple truth is that diseases can be and ARE transmitted from animals to humans AND from humans to animals.  When a disease is not easily and quickly transmitted like a flu bug, it may be difficult to hunt …

H1N1 Hits Dogs, and Cheetahs too

H1N1 has been identified in 2 dogs in China.  Well, it isn't in the US but it sure means we now KNOW it can happen.  Unlike the reports we get here in the US, the Chinese didn't presume that the virus came from a human; they didn't speculate that it was somehow less likely that the dogs could pass t…

It’s a Wonderful Death (On Euthanasia and Death Panels)

Today is World AIDS Day and, in honor of my mother, one of the victims of AIDS, I want to write on a hopeful topic.  Yes, death is or can be a hopeful topic.

Death is a part of life, just a part of the cycle all living things progress through.  I remember my grandfather’s death in an accident.  Tha…

Bad Dentist, Bad, BAD Dentist

Coming from a family with serious genetic faults when it comes to teeth, I wasn't allowed candy or junk food as a young child.  Even so, I ended up with several crowns on my baby teeth.  I had the most wonderful, incredible "baby" dentist in Kansas City.  He's the one who put those crowns on my teet…
