Do Something

It is the inherent obligation of each and every professional to oversee their profession; to ensure that all members of the profession are meeting the minimum standards.  The only people who can easily evaluate a professional are other members of the same profession.  The walls of silence in every profession MUST be torn down.  All must be willing to step forward and speak out against any sub-par performance by another member of their profession.

All that's necessary for evil to succeed is for good people to do nothing.  Are you a good person who does nothing?

If someone approaches you for an evaluation of previous professional work, will you give an honest evaluation, will you document it, will you point out possible errors by the prior professional, will you report violations by colleagues to your board or bar, will you testify at hearings or court?  If you will not do these things, you are a part of the problem.  You may be a good person but you're doing nothing to protect your profession and that's how public perception of your profession declines as the profession is indeed declining from lack of self-regulation and enforcement.

Don't tell me how you paid for your own education so you are entitled to do as you please.  You very probably did NOT pay for your education but only a mere portion of it.  Don't tell me you're buried in loans from your schooling and can't be bothered with non-paying work on your professional obligations.  First, those loans are absolute proof you haven't yet paid for even your portion of your educational costs.  Second, you do have time, MAKE time.  Third, if professions don't clean up their own acts, others will.

And on that note.  Others includes members of other professions and the public.  Join together and demand that the educations you paid for be put to proper use.  Yes, professionals are entitled to make a decent living but they have obligations they simply must not shirk.  Join together and demand that professionals do all they are required, that professions do right by the public, else be dissolved.

I don't know a single person who hasn't been harmed by a professional.  Sadly, most have not even filed complaints against those professionals because they see it as futile.  I understand, I have a stack of them that need filed.  I have no doubt that not a single one will be taken seriously when I file them and I will be filing them all.  In addition, I'll get a "reputation" for filing board and bar complaints and that will be one more reason to dismiss them.

Boards, bars, and courts, you simply must take these complaints seriously.  Only a small number of people go to the trouble of filing so each complaint should probably be seen as representing 100 or more violations, not merely the one before you.  If you don't hold professionals accountable, then what?  Will you or someone you know ever need professional services?  You better hope not!
