BARC Calling for Kitty Fosters

It’s that time of year and Houston BARC (Bureau of Animal Regulation and Control) is overwhelmed by sick kittens who need fostering in isolation from other cats due to their respiratory ailments.  BARC is “under new management” and it seems one has to attend a class to become a foster now and there seem to be a number of hoops to become a volunteer.  I guess I’m old fashioned.  Last time I worked at a shelter, any volunteer who walked through the door got put to work and we trained them as we went, getting WORK done along the way.  I don’t get having people spend time in classrooms and filling out paper when work needs done, when animals need hands on care.  Well, maybe it’s because so many young people just don’t get exposure to tending animals earlier in life as they used to get.
